Help Us Help Family's In Need
We have been running our Computer Recycling Center in Vancouver Washington since 2004, refurbishing computers and laptops so that students in both Portland and Vancouver can receive a free computer system through the CrossBytes Computer Nomination Program. We want to help to further their education and make their futures unlimited. With our world moving more towards technology in our schools, the less fortunate children and families are the ones who end up suffering. We need your help to level the playing field by donating to our Computer Recycling Center. When you donate you will be helping all of us to be environmentally conscience.
For more information about how we destroy your personal data and other common questions that we have had please go to our FAQs page.
If your are Interested in how you can follow the downstream evolution of the equipment that we recycle at out computer recycling center, please go to our FAQs page.
If there is something that you would like to know or if you have any suggestions please do not hesitate to go to our contacts page.
Free Computers systems are available to students in need. Contact your school administrators to find out if your school is part of the CrossBytes Nomination Program to begin the application process.
If you are interested on events that we will be doing or attending or just want to know when the next Linux Fest or convention will be in our area please head over to our events page.
If you would like us to pick up equipment, or have any questions about the CrossBytes Computer Nomination Program please go to our contact us page.

Ubuntu Out Fedora In
Puting Out Another Fedora 12 SystemToday we put out another computer system for the Share Homestead in Vancouver Wa. The thing that I noticed today was that they have their systems running on Ubuntu. It is a shame that they seemed to have failed to follow up and make sure their systems were still up and running..I think that received their systems from Free Geek when they were located in Vancouver also. So it seems that we have taken over here in Vancouver where Free Geek has left off. We must thank them though in setting up the ground work. Now we just need to work together with getting more systems out with Fedora. We have been catalgong ...

Why we Use Fedora and not Microsoft
The Greenest Operating System At Crossbytes we are trying to be as green as possible in our computer recycling center and we also pass that on to all parts of our processes. We use Fedora (which forms the basis for the operating system Red Hat Enterprise) because it has shown in testing to be the greenest. Red Hat has proven to beat Windows Server 2008 in 13 out of 16 power consumption tests. These tests included a non active test without power savings applied (Red Hat won 3 out of 4); a non active test with power savings applied (Red Hat won 4 out of 4); Active test without power saving applied (Red Hat won 3 out of 4); and ...

A Great Green Start For Us At Our Computer Recycling Center
Fedora Going Green CrossBytes in 2009 had processed at our computer recycling center 5541 Lbs. (2.77 Tons) of E-Waste. That means that with the help of the Fedora Project and our computer nomination program we have stopped 682 lbs. of Lead, 1.19 lbs. of Cadmium, and 154.20 lbs. of Mercury from entering into landfills. As of Feb 15 2010 we have already processed just shy of a 1/2 ton of E-Waste. We thank all of the corporate donors and personal donors and of course the Fedora project for making all of this possible . We install fedora with several different spins and desktops from XFCE4, LXDE, Moblin, Gnome, KDE and even PPC on some older ...

Fedora 12 Ready To Go Onto The ASUS Pundit
ASUS Pundit And Fedora Almost Ready To Go Out After receiving a fairly large donation from Dick Hannah Dealerships. We have just finished refurbishing the first set of 25 computers that they have donated to our computer recycling center. From our recycling center these will go directly into the CrossBytes Computer Nominations Program where these computers will have Fedora installed on them as the Operating System. The computer will than be matched up with a monitor, keyboard, mouse and printer if available. Then this complete system will be put into the hands of a child for free that could not otherwise afford a computer system.
